Come and discover the world of bespoke hand embroidery in Britain's oldest embroidery house, Hand & Lock.

Producing work for clients including the British Royal Family and British Military, you will learn about the history of the company dating back to 1767. You will be able to handle pieces from their collection from the Coronation of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as their experts explain their integral role in ceremonial British life.

H&L's embroidery experts will guide you through the separate departments of the company, exploring everything from Hand Embroidery, Digital Embroidery and Irish Machine Embroidery. You'll be able to view the process of creating bespoke embroidery and metalwork pieces as well as having a hands-on experience exploring their sample archive.

Our tour guide will also explain the work they produce for other clients such as Burberry, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton.

After lunch (taken externally at your own expense), you'll be able to immerse yourself in the luxurious art of goldwork embroidery with a comprehensive 3-hour introductory course. First you'll get acquainted with the essential tools and materials i.e threads, needles and fabrics. Under the guidance of an expert tutor, you'll then practise foundational goldwork stitches such as couching, padding and chipping. By the end of the course you will have a solid understanding of goldwork embroidery basics, an appreciation for its artistic and historical significance and the confidence to embark on your own goldwork projects.
